The Atkins Diet: Low-Carb Mania à à à à à à à à Dr. Robert Atkins ignited the dieting world when he introduced the word ââ¬Å"low carb mania,â⬠which is now known as the Atkins diet. The diet claims that you can lose weight on a high fat, high protein diet. The program works on four main principles which are to limit the amount of consumption of simple carbohydrates, increase the intake of protein, to exercise on a daily basis, and to maintain proper food consumption. The new diet revolution has stirred up a controversial debate on whether the higher fat, lower carb diet is healthy in the long run for diet consumers. Some people say that it is not a healthy diet and that it includes too much fat, while others say it is the only weight loss diet that has finally helped them to take off a significant amount of weight. à à à à à à à à The diet became an instant craze since it has been proven that many Americans eat excessive amounts of simple carbohydrates such as rice, alcohol, sugar, white flour, and sugar. As a result of the surge in obesity and high calorie intakes, the Atkins diet aims to eliminate the simple carbohydrate consumption by replacing it with high fat, high animal protein foods such as bacon, sausage, butter, steak, eggs, and brie. These rich foods are allowed as part of the diet since it claims that you will lose weight fast while just following the routine. Although the diet may cause one to lose weight, critics have found the diet to have considerable drawbacks. The Atkins diet restriction on carbohydrates is not very healthy since complex carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are found to contain essential nutrients and rich in fiber. Fiber is known to slow the absorption of food, which prevents blood glucose to rise and reduce insulin surges, therefore decreasing desire to eat. Critics have found that simple carbohydrates should be substituted for complex carbohydrates instead of eliminating carbohydrates from the diet completely. Complex carbohydrates and whole foods are rich in photochemical, bioflavonoid, carotenoids, and other substances that may reduce the risk of many chronic diseases.

Greek Life Essay
Greek Life Since the Kappa Alpha Society was founded in 1825 at Union College, all but three United States Presidents have been members of a fraternity. The Greek system now contains nine million members across 123 chapters of fraternities and sororities. Nine million people have taken advantage of the opportunity to better themselves and their universities through a fraternity or sorority. However whenever a Greek organization is featured in the media, it is usually for reasons of an out of control party or hazing allegations.The media ignores the millions of hours dedicated to community service, as well as the millions of dollars raised for charity annually. Hazing makes headlines, philanthropy does not. The Greek system is frequently criticized for instances of members breaking the non-hazing policy of every chapter across the country, and is regularly condemned for it. Hazing is an illegal part of many organizations, including the military, sports teams, marching bands, fraternit ies and sororities. Hazing again is illegal in all of these organizations and is specifically addressed in the handbook of many Greek organizations.For some, hazing is seen as a rite of passage, and is expected when pledging a fraternity. Regardless, this practice is actually less popular than the media makes it seem. I personally am pledging a fraternity here at Salem State University, and have never been told or forced to do something I did not want to do. Hazing does happen though, and it sadly it hurts the image of the Greek system as a whole. Dartmouth College, the school where the famed fraternity film Animal House is set, has been notorious for their brutal hazing practices.In an article written by an ex-fraternity member at Dartmouth, Andrew Lohse recalls the horrible acts he had to perform in order to gain acceptance into one of the 17 chapters. ââ¬Å"I was a member of a fraternity that asked pledges, in order to become a brother, to: swim in a kiddie pool of vomit, urine, fecal matter, semen and rotten food products; eat omelets made of vomit; chug cups of vinegar, which in one case caused a pledge to vomit blood; drink beer poured down fellow pledges' ass cracksâ⬠¦ mong other abuses. â⬠This type of behavior does indeed happen at some chapters. Those chapters however, are quickly discovered, investigated, and when evidence of hazing is clear, the national chapter of that fraternity shuts down the chapter at the college. The members involved can also be tried in court, and face jail time and heavy fines. The purpose of pledgeship is not to humiliate and demean future members; it is to build a strong bond with oneââ¬â¢s pledge brothers and fraternity brothers.As told to me by a brother when I asked if we were ever going to be hit, he answered, ââ¬Å"no, this fraternity is made up of my friends and I donââ¬â¢t know about you, but I donââ¬â¢t hit my friends. â⬠Throughout pledgeship we are told to look around at each other and r ealize that the gentleman in our fraternity are not just college buddies, they are going to be standing beside us at our wedding and looking over us at our funeral. As my pledgeship winds down and my initiation approaches, I can honestly say that I am much different than I was a few months ago.My leadership ability has increased immensely; I was elected the president of my pledge class and have taken on more responsibility than I ever thought myself capable of. I find myself not afraid to take on a challenge, or step up as a leader in my classes and activities. A fraternity does not just benefit an individual on a personal level, in the professional world; it is a huge advantage over competition for a job. Right now, 85% of Fortune 500 executives were a part of Greek life. The vast network of alumni branching across the world opens up numerous possibilities for employment.The Greek community takes care of each other, and when an employer sees that a potential employee was Greek in c ollege, they automatically have an advantage. If the employee was in the same chapter as the employer, that advantage becomes even bigger. Being in a fraternity opens up doors for thousands of college graduates every year. Warren Buffett, named one of the most influential people in the world by Time magazine, was a part of my fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi. Buffett has also been on the list for the richest man in the world numerous times.Many successful businessmen, politicians, and community leaders since 1825 are the products of Greek life on their college campuses. The public frequently condemns the Greek system when members choose to break the law, however the system is rarely commended when the same members raise thousands of dollars for charity. Personal leadership and responsibility is a skill that not many have, and cannot be taught. A fraternity or sorority does teach this and more, and develops wide-eyed freshman on a college campus into successful adults in a very short amou nt of time.The Greek system has been doing this since 1825, and will continue to mold model citizens for the world. Analysis Of Away By Michael Gow - 751 Words
AWAY Michael Gow ââ¬Å"Awayâ⬠is a play written in 1988 by Michael Gow. Away refers to the central ideas of Australia in 1967-68. The central ideas embrace the outsiders, family conflicts and grief and loss which affected families in the play. Gow uses three main families to convey the message of the play. The use of language and stylistic devices influence the way Gow has been able to speak to the modern Australian audience. In the play ââ¬Å"Awayâ⬠Gow is able to speak to the modern Australian audience with the use of allusion. Gow alludes to two of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s plays; Midsummer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream and King Lear, two well-known actors in the 1960ââ¬â¢s; Chips Rafferty and Laurance Olivier and the Vietnam War. In Act 2 Scene 3 Gow alludes to The Vietnam War, and the effect it had on the families when Roy (Corals husband) says, ââ¬Å"We are not the first people in the history of the world to lose a son in war.â⬠To allow the modern audience to understand the effect that The Vietnam War had Gow portrayed Coral as depressed. Throughout Act 2 Scene 3 a juxtaposition is used with Coral continuously being referred to as ââ¬Å"Kim Novakâ⬠. Todayââ¬â¢s Australian audience would not know who Kim Novak is. Kim Novak was a gorgeous American Actress in the 1950ââ¬â¢s. Harry alludes to an old Chinese phrase, ââ¬Å"The Chinese donââ¬â¢t believe in being too upset when someone dies. That would mean you thought theyââ¬â¢d died too soon and what theyââ¬â¢d done up till then didnââ¬â¢t am ount to much.â⬠in Act 4 Scene 1, when referring to Tomââ¬â¢s illness; cancer of the blood. Securing an internship with the State Historic Preservation Office, a bureau within the Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission, is perhaps one of the finest organizations for a graduate student to spend their summer. What is ethics? Ethics a philosophical term originating from Greek word ââ¬Å"ethosâ⬠meaning custom or character. It is concerned with describing and prescribing moral requirements and behaviors, which suggests that there are acceptable and unacceptable ways of behaving that serve as a function of philosophical principles (Minkes, Small, Chatterjee, 1999). Ethical behavior is defined as behavior which is morally accepted as ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠and ââ¬Å"rightâ⬠as opposed to ââ¬Å"badâ⬠or ââ¬Å"wrongâ⬠in a given situation (Sims, 1992). Plant forever- The tender which was posted by plant forever on 30th may reached the university on 2nd June which was beyond the time prescribed for the tender invitation. However according to the principles of postal rule it would be deemed that the tender was effective on 30th May itself which was before the prescribed time and thus valid. The letter of acceptance in relation to the tender was posted by the University however the letter did not reach plant forever. It has been further provided that plant forever did not receive the letter as it was destroyed by a post worker. However according to the principles of the postal rule as soon as the letter was posted a contract was formed between the university and Plant Forever. This is because a proper offer and acceptance process had been completed between the parties. Thus the university has the right to claim compensation from plant forever as it as committed its full stock elsewhere. On 6th October counter offer was sent buy Footloose to James shoes stating that they will sell the thing back sandals at 30000 for 2000 pairs but the price would be exclusive of GST. It was further stated that the payment would be accepted by cheque or cash. This was a counter offer because the terms of the acceptance was not same as the offer made on 4th October where the place Where's inclusive of GST. On 8 October a letter was sent by James to Footloose which provided that referring to the counter offer made on 6th October gents footwear are ready to meet the terms of the offer however the delivery date was still to be ascertain does a proper acceptance was yet to be made. The contract was finally formed on 10th October where Ms Simeone a call chains and discussed that the delivery of the sandals would be collected by James shoes on 1st November from famous Footloose Sydney warehouse. This could be termed as a complete contract because all the Essentials of a valid offer and acceptance for completed on this date. Conclusion From 1st October to 8th October the communication between the three companies only lead to invitation to an offer, offers and Counter offers. A proper contract through a valid acceptance was only made n 10th October between Footloose and Jamess shoes. Communications and conflict Essay Joannes understanding of friendship and business is probably much more definitive and structured than the white student worker. Asians are known for their adherence to rules and regulations differing from a more laid back point of view of someone born and raised in the United States. Joanne should have been more aware of the cultural differences between herself and the student worker, and in doing so could help to quell other conflicts in the future. Joannes second conflict occurred between her and a colleague. This woman was from Puerto Rico, around twenty years older. They had worked together for 2 years in the same administrative aide position. This woman was constantly blaming others for mistakes or problems in the office. Items would go missing or something would break, and the women would immediately blame someone for the mishap. It had always annoyed Joanne, but as it progressed, the claims became more serious. It became too much for her when she accused one of Joannes friends of opening another colleagues mail and stealing money out of it. Joanne approached the women and asked her how she knew it was her friend that had stolen the money out of the mail. The women did not have an answer. Joanne then told her that it wasnt fair for her to be blaming others without proper evidence that what she was saying was not true. She also told her that before saying things of this nature, she should approach the person she is accusing and get the full story. The women immediately became defensive and angry. Joanne then resorted to humor and sarcasm to suppress her anger, making jokes about where the money had actually gone and teasingly accusing the woman of stealing it. Joanne told me that making a joke out of it helper her to vent some of her steam but also let others around her be aware of the situation. The conflict still exists and Joanne still resorts to sarcasm to deal with it (sounds like someone I know). The source of this conflict was one of diverging beliefs in attitudes. It also explains Joannes unlikely competitive approach to the situation even though she normally is avoiding. As she mentioned earlier in the interview, when it is a question of her beliefs, she does not hesitate to say something. Her approach to the situation was well worded and she created a non-hostile communication environment by inviting the women into the conversation. Her conflict solving style was accommodating, but the conflict was not really solved. By resorting to joking and sarcasm Joanne may have potentially created an even bigger problem. If, by chance, the person hearing the joke takes offense, the conflict can turn into an even larger scale conflict. The book says that, jokes or sarcastic remarks can be defended, as Joanne felt when she used them, but it recommends being more open and honest when a conflict occurs. After interviewing Joanne and dissecting her conflicts very carefully, I have come to understand how important conflict management skills are in todays society. We are confronted with conflicts everyday and being knowledgeable about ways to solve them is essential in moving forward in ones career and in life. The book relates that, Effective conflict management requires a positive attitude toward appropriate interpersonal communication and toward conflict itself. Rather than regard all conflict as a threat or a negative condition, individuals need to consider expressed differences as the potential for creativity and growth(Borisoff 29). Many people view conflict as negative and hindering to interactions. Yet in becoming a better conflict solver, I have realized that I can use conflicts to my advantage and use them to create change when I am unhappy in a relationship or at work. There is no way to completely rid the world of conflicts. People will always have differences and disagreements, but we must see it as, a source of great potential and productivity(223). Having the ability to embrace conflicts will ensure great promise in dealing with interactions in the workplace and in relationships.
